Well well.. turns out I haven't been hallucinating in the end. After updating my phone to iOS 4.3.1 I felt like the SMS vibration was different. And in fact: After updating to ios 4.3+ the SMS vibration is different than in previous OS versions.Also, you can find the full list of iOS changes on Simonblog.
